If you search for the name of my home town, Stenhamra, on Instagram, the search results are dominated by a single user – @tbrburgers “The burger revolution”, run by a guy named Mattias, who is a hamburger expert. This caught my interest sometime in the fall and since i was looking for food photo related projects, i reached out to Mattias. It also turned out we kinda knew each other – or at least knew of each other. Mattias used to work at my local grocery store a few years ago and i always talk to everyone there so we were not total strangers.
Anyway – i reached out to ask if he was interested in a collaboration and yes, he was. Great success. For various reasons (mainly my fault), we didn’t get together until a couple of weeks ago.
In the meantime, i did some preparation. I searched the web for hamburger photos and made a few on my own to test different compositions and lighting setups. Hamburgers are not an easy subject. A hamburger in itself is pretty dull. The key is to have some addons, like sauces, onions or cheese that can reflect some good highlights. As far as composition goes, a top-down angle doesn’t make much sense and the light can’t be from behind the burger.
The initial plan for our first meeting was to simply sit down and brainstorm ideas, but we ended up doing a photoshoot. Mattias made his burgers and i photographed them on a simple set. I used a simple one light setup with a grid that gave us a hard focused light.
It was pretty intense work and i didn’t have a lot of time to play around with alternative lighting. I just wanted to capture some usable photos of his burgers this first time, and the pictures came out pretty decent. We’ll get time to experiment later, because the intention is definitely to get together again and do more work together. We had three different setups and i ended up taking about a hundred photos.
Mattias has a few other collaborations going. One of them is with the Mexican soda Jarritos. We had a few Jarritos colas while working and we made sure to include the bottles in the sets.
TBR burgers are badass!
Of course, we ate the burgers after they were done in front of the camera. The verdict? I’ll give them a five star review. Mattias makes some of the best burgers i have ever had. Follow him on Instagram @tbrburgers and his web site. If you’re lucky, you might get an invitation to one of his hamburger events
