2014 has been a great year for my photography. Looking back, i can’t believe how much i’ve learned. I thought i’d take a moment to summarize it.
This year’s favourite shots
It’s funny. My favourite shots are often the technically imperfect ones that capture a situation and tell a story. I guess that’s the essence of photography, at least to me. It’s not about passing the quality control of Shutterstock, it’s about getting an image that you keep looking at and that says something to you. One of my favourites this year is a technical disaster. Shot at a party with practically no light to work with, i was taking snapshots with my Nikon P340 and the flash failed to fire for some reason, resulting in an unsharp, grainy ugly picture that i just love. I won’t try to take you through why i like it, but here it is:
An other one that comes to mind is this one. Shot from the hip with my Nikon P340, while i walked by a bar in France and spotted this guy. To me, he looks like someone from a 1970’s spy movie or something. It really tells a story.
I’m not sure how many handball games i’ve shot this year, but it’s thousands of images. I keep looking for ways to get better. I think my biggest improvement is that i try to get close and catch the action and emotion as opposed to just documenting the situations in the games.
Cameras and gear
This summer, i got the Nikon Coolpix P340 as a replacement for my P300. I ended up breaking it and repairing for almost as much as i paid for it in the first place. Ouch. I also dropped my trusty old Nikon speedlight and broke it.
I bought the Lee Big stopper filter. Didn’t use it a lot though. This is my favorite with it so far.
And then i finally went out and bought the Nikon D7100 for myself for christmas. I’ve had my eyes on it for a long time. I first mentioned it in this post in August 2013, actually. Now it’s finally sitting on my desk. I’ll get back to that in a future post.
Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much stuff i’ve learned this past year. I’ve gone through Lightroom bit by bit and shared what i’ve learned in this blog. I think next year will be more about learning different aspects of photography itself. I want to expore landscape, street, portrait, macro and food photography. Probably something else too that i can’t think of right now.
New stuff i tried
When i was on a family trip to Nice, France this summer, i went out and did some street photography and immediately fell in love with it. I’m sure i’ll do more of that in the future because it’s a lot of fun.
I finally figured out what to do with my sites
I’ve had these two domain names for a few years and never been able to figure out what to use them for. I think i’ll be using www.bubbelbubbel.se for sharing what i learn in this blog. My other site, www.weedobooty.com is on SmugMug, which is great for creating galleries from inside Lightroom, so that’s what i’ll be doing there. Glad that finally fell into place.
